On my lunch break from the day job, so I thought I would get some reading in. I highly recommend Write Now! for great insight into comic writing. This month’s issue (#5) has an interview with Will Eisner, and he touches on an interesting concept.

Eisner always changes the geography of an area. Streets get different names or fictitious neighborhoods are created to represent another. This is something I did quite a bit of in Golden Boy, obviously in the bar the characters frequent, The Final Round, but I have also reworked the neighborhood, the cemetary, the boxing gym, and the barber shop from actual places in Omaha to fit the world I perceive in my mind’s eye everyday.

Eisner does this to let the story become more intimate with the reader. Unfortunately, I cannot claim such insight into my reasons (maybe after I’ve had Eisner’s life, what a creator). Mostly to me, it felt right. Probably at this early stage in my career, I’ll have more of those feelings for a long time to come.

Anyway… Danny Fingeroth does an excellent job on this magazine. I get excited for it every month. Pick one up, if you have an interest. Draw is great too.
