Late last fall, I was visiting my folks, and talking with my Dad about running. He asked about the comic, and I told him how split up I was on these other projects I wanted to. I felt that my work thus far on Golden Boy wasn’t very good. I felt like I should move on to another project. Then he lays this down: “Just do one thing at a time. Once that project is done, move on to the others.”
Sometimes, you forget how simple it needs to be. I’ve been trying to live by this gold nugget of fatherly advice for almost a year now. I still have days where I start getting overwhelmed with the idea of several projects at once, thus getting nowhere but a sleepless night and nothing actually done. However, for the most part, I am happy with just trying to make Golden Boy the best that it can be and to learn from its mistakes.
What happens when I want to work on another project, like redesigning my website? I took a week off from Golden Boy to do just that. I broke down all the tasks that were too big to handle in a weekend, and did what I could. This week I get started on Issue 4 again. Occasionally, I’ll work on some of the other web projects I have planned. My poor website gets updated once a year. I’d like that to change to once a month.
What happens after Golden Boy is done? Simple. A month of sleep and rest, and then onto the next comic projects, one at a time.
