I just re-imagined page 20 of Issue 3. It was a full page splash of a block party, and when I was laying it out, I went the lazy route and thought about using a photo. I am not opposed to photos, in fact, I’ve used them for texture and for thematic emphasis in certain situations throughout the book. However, I remembered that this page would break the running visual theme were I to cop out and use a photo. Unfortunately, as I’d like to believe that I have artistic integrity, I bet you if I could have made any of the photos I had planned for the page actually work, then the visual theme be damned.
Here’s a link to the page.
You’ll notice there aren’t any people. I wanted a desolate feel to the festivities, like the neighborhood didn’t really want to come outside and celebrate their community out of fear and/or apathy.
And no, I am not lazy, as all the figures were roughed out on another layer. Ha! I do have integrity after all!
