Towards the end of this week, the Xeric winners have slowly been coming forward; congratulations are in order. I’ve found myself pondering that rejection from this process shouldn’t be negative, as the winners well and truly deserve it, and they get a chance at a dream that may have been unachievable. Some of the winners have applied several times in the past; the accomplishment has to be twice as sweet to them after years of hard work.

So where does this leave me?

I’ve thought about the whole thing quite a bit, whether I should go forward with publishing Golden Boy at all. Maybe it isn’t any good, and I don’t know whether I could realistically make that sort of financial commitment for printing in color overseas (especially as my wife and I are looking for our first house). The best course of action, I think, would be to publish the entire book in black in white (and grey tones), with the prequel story added to the front of the book (where it should be), and going with a print-on-demand solution. That way, I can order as much quantity as I need without the hassle of storage fees or racking up massive debt before I break even. Plus, it will help lower the price point for you, loyal readers! I was looking at something around $17 for a color book. Now, not only do you get more story, but you will also get it for much cheaper (somewhere around the $10-$12 range). So, this may have ended up for the best for the book.

Now, as I see it, I’ll have to:

  1. Convert all the art to black, white and grey.
  2. Re-letter the entire book (more from previous lack of knowledge than anything else).
  3. Re-do a page.
  4. Add a page for the sake of the story.
  5. Lay the book out.
  6. Get an ISBN number.

And away we go!
