As I was updating this month’s entry into the Pinups section (go check it out now – I’m very happy with it), my computer bombed again. After a heavy sigh, I realized that the frequency of these crashes would make getting any work done near impossible today. It was time for a clean install – but why settle for Panther when I could upgrade to Tiger?
It was as good an excuse as any to go purchase the new Mac OS. I’m not a big fan of rushing out to get the upgrade, usually because I have critical work that needs to get done when they are released. However, with Panther crashing on me in the most arcane ways at least once a session, I figured I had nothing to lose.
I have to say it has been great, minus a few minor hiccups. The most problems I had was importing my old Mailboxes (which apparently need to be drug out onto the Desktop in order for them to be imported) and the fact that I forgot to deauthorize my purchased music in iTunes. I was quickly able to fix that by copying over my iTunes XML file.
Tiger. Tiger has style. I’m enjoying the Dashboard and the animated RSS Feed Screen Saver the most. Everything on my old dual 1GB tower is purring. Clean installs do that. Gets rid of all the crap. You start fresh. Once I got over the fear, erasing your hard drive and starting from scratch is amazing.
I mowed the lawn while the installation was running, listening to my new iPod shuffle and contemplating how I wish I could have a clean break. A fresh start, just for the hell of it. Not a do-over, per se, but a good clean change to start fresh.
If a change isn’t quite available for me right now, at least I am sleeping again (got a ton of sleep last night) as is Quincy. We’ve got some good medecine for him, and he finally seems to be comfortable. The vet also recommended getting him a doggie t-shirt, so we did!
On top of it all, I got a Golden Ticket for Backpack! Not at all what I expected. It is even cooler than I expected. It was a good day for products I love (Apple and 37 Signals, life would suck without you).
