    Back from Chicago

I went to the WizardWorld Chicago comic convention with my fellow Shocktraumanauts and had a blast. I spoke with tons of nice people, bought some great books, and slept very little.

I just read all of the five year collection of American Elf. It’s so good, and weighing in at 520 pages, took me most of the trip home and today to read. I was given the privilege of previewing the Chicago strips while James Kochalka signed my copy. I’m jealous… sometimes I wish I had the stamina to do a daily strip. That would be fun, especially to go back and look at them over time.

I also finally met Neil, and we chatted about Ninety Candles. He’s doing really well for himself. We caught up with a drink at the Hyatt.

I’m wiped still. I had lunch with a bunch of designers today, and it felt weird not to talk about comics once during the whole time. I miss my comic life already.

I miss sleep, too. I need to get me some of that action shortly.

Good to hear you had a good time. I really wish I could have attended the San Diego Comic Con this year.

The closest convention would probably be in New York City, but that’s an 8-hour drive from where I live.

Chicago is always fun and worth the drive. It is an 8 hour trek for me also, but it is a blast with friends. I’m still going through withdrawal from all the comic-centric conversations.

I haven’t been to San Diego yet either. I will hopefully be going to the small press cons this next year once I get Golden Boy printed up! Those should be fun.

I think one of the best things about my trip to Chicago is the conversations while driving. I have flown to the con, and found it an amazingly hollow experience. Sure, i get there quicker, but in the end, it’s to discussions about Hulk v.s. Superman that make the event so much fun.

Sadly, the only time when those sort of conversations are really fun seem to be in the car hurtling back home or to the con. I try having them with my wife over dinner, and she just changes the subject! :)

Last time I was in Chicago was for my brother’s Naval graduation ceremony. I traveled my train and the trip was a memorable one.

The trip from Rochester to Chicago was smooth, however, the trip from Chicago to Rochester was a rough experience. We had a 24 hour delay coupled with a train that malfunctioned somewhere in Indiana.

    Sad, but true story.
