When I’m feeling particularly rundown, tired, and bummed from life, I always get a little chuckle out of a line from the English-dubbed version of Hard-Boiled (otherwise known as “Hot-Handed God of Cops” in the title’s literal English translation). There’s a part where Tequila (yep, that his name) is talking to his mentor, and the mentor says “you can’t win everytime, but you can’t lose forever.”
I like that, because I lose a hell of a lot all the damn time. So one of these days, hopefully with something important, I’ll win.
I also like that Hard-Boiled has more on screen deaths than any other movie (a whopping 230, thanks John Woo).
On the same theme (of loser-dom), Spider-Man 2 is amazing. Don’t get me started on it or I’ll talk your ear off on how great it is. The best parts are the heartbreaking loser moments pulled off with true geek style by Tobey Maguire.
I haven’t heard that quote before, but how true! I’ve been thinking along the same line lately – to remove yourself from other’s rules and do your own thing to your satisfaction. It relates back to my notions of being in comics, and redefining what my ‘success’ truly is to me. I hear too many comics people despairing about their position in the system, and I have to wonder what they are comparing themselves to. I’m guilty of this thinking, also. That is why I’ve been re-evaluating what success means to me, without compromising my goals.
RE: Spider-Man 2: Harry and Peter’s relationship gets tremendously more complicated and complex. It was the one thing that has me dying for another sequel.
I was such a gushy bitch watching it last night. I was so wrapped up in the action and especially the romance (will they finally hookup since MJ always gets kidnapped by his villains anyway)! I never do that at movies!
“You can’t win everytime, but you can’t lose forever.” Damn, that’s good. And totally suits me right now: I feel like I keep getting hammered by bad luck and crappy people. Thanks for the good words, my man. Your weblog never ceases to inspire and motivate me. I am grateful. Especially today.
Spidey 2 definitely awesome. It’s so much like I imagined it when I was 7. Haha.. my wife was getting teary at the MJ scenes – I was getting teary when he would web sling between the tractor and trailor of the moving semi-truck. Truely a beautiful thing.
p.s. F*** Bill Cosby!

Love the quote. Reminds me of Bill Cosby’s infamous quote:
“I don’t know the key to success, but the key to failure it trying to please everyone.” – Bill Cosby
So true in fact that I might get it tattoed on my forehead.
I’m glad Spiderman 2 turned out great. I haven’t had the chance to go see it yet, but when I do, I, uh, will. :)
The plotline between Harry and Peter Parker (as Spiderman’s official photographer) looks awesome, according to what I’ve seen in the preview.
