I’m still in a fog after the redesign went in all the way back on May 11th. I’ve been keeping a low profile, catching up with friends and media. I had a great evening last night. I hopped on my bike trainer and tested out my new book caddy by reading this week’s Economist in its entirity. I rode for an hour, hopped off, fixed some dinner and watched the Netflix movie I’ve had for three weeks, Primer (amazing).
That was it. I went to bed early and capped off the night reading Moonraker. I haven’t been this happy in a long time. Warm weather, friends, my family, X-Men 3 coming out, a long holiday weekend to look forward to: these are all making me feel extremely lucky and I’m savoring the moment because I have to start working again soon at night on comics.
As such, I’ve been thinking of making Friday night a jam night – I seem to get some good work done on Fridays. I’d like to set up my office a bit better for my friends to come over after work and to have a drink with me as I work on comics. Our once-a-month Artist Studio jams at Krypton have been fun (when I have something to work on). We used to have cartoonist jams in high school with the cartoon and graphics staff at the high school paper. I miss that…
I would be game, mountain man.
I miss those cartoon jam sessions, too. The good parts at least. The energy, the feeding off each other’s creative input, the amazing quality of stuff we were able to produce considering the constraints against which we were working, and of course Slurpees. Glorious Slurpees.
What I don’t miss is working on Mac Classics with 8 Meg of RAM, rendering effects that took hours to process and usually caused the Mac to bomb, getting mad at each other over stupid crap, and not sleeping for days on end. Oh, and meals consisting of Fat Freddy’s, Funions, and 3 Musketeers bars. And Slurpees (which as I said before are great, but not when combined with Fat Freddy’s, Funions, and 3 Musketeers bars, as I’m sure you can attest. In fact, you may be the only person in the world who can attest).
Actually, I take that back. All that crap was part of the experience, and without it, the good times might not have been as good. ‘Cause there are very few things in life that are sweeter than coming back from an hour break while your 8 Meg Mac (Ram Doubled up to 16!) processed the lens flare you made in Photoshop 2 and finding that it actually worked, looked good, and didn’t bomb your computer (Of course this was usually after something like 16 previous attempts, but like I said, that’s what made it so satisfying). While our peers were out getting drunk and (gasp!) getting laid, we were getting high off Sharpie fumes and Photoshop effects.
Yes, that sounds sad, but if you actually had to go through it, you know that I’m right when I say it was a very special high that is indeed hard to beat.

Reading a week’s Economist in its entirity is a big task. It will also make you a wise man.
