Last night I went home, poured myself a glass of bourbon and started to read through the entire collection of Fables. I purchased all but one of the trade paperback collections yesterday (number 3). Christian let me borrow them Vols. 1 through 7 in November. Vol. 8 is since out (and in my hot little hands).
The pages and bourbon flowed last night, and I got through all the books I’ve read previously. Tonight I crack open Vol. 8, which promises the return of Bigby Wolf (yah!).
So what is all this about? Stay with me here – Fables is about all the characters in fables (duh) who are living in our world. Why? Their homelands were taken over by the Adversary. They are in exile. When someone told me about it initially, I thought it sounded like a terrible idea. Having read it, I can’t be more pleased to have been wrong. It is an impressively well told story with hints of intrigue and traditional spy stories mashed with romance, war, and mystery (such as the true identity of the Adversary). I think in the hands of a lesser writer, the comic would probably remain static and unchanged for many issues hoping the concept alone was enough to carry it. Thankfully, Bill Willingham is a hell of a writer, and the only thing certain in this book is that the status quo changes constantly. And the changes that seem bad at first end up being so masterfully told that you can’t help but like them. I’m thinking specifically of Prince Charming’s character arc in this instance, but I don’t want to ruin it for you if you haven’t read it.
Also pleasing my sequential senses are the covers by James Jean. You can browse through all 60 covers of the series online at his website: each one is lushly illustrated and designed with his trademark muted color palette.
If you are looking for a great read, I can recommend this series of collections to anyone. It won me over and I went in expecting to hate it.
Volume 8. Awesome. Operation: Israel is great.
It is so nice to be surprised by comics again.
Also, something I didn’t mention – Buckingham on art rocks my world. I’m happy to see that he’ll be remembered for something other than Miracleman – the stuff he is producing in Fables is wonderfully rich (not that his Miracleman/Marvelman work is bad, far from it. It is just that he is a name associated with one of the most discussed topics in comic history – people will remember the name most likely and not the art – Fables helps cement his name and work in history).
I couldn’t get into Fables. I read a several issue run thanks to aquiring a huge pile of DC/Vertigo/Wildstorm comp. comics from someone who will go unnamed “cough” PHIL “cough”... From what I’ve read I can agree that its a quality read, but I just couldn’t get into it. I don’t like Fables. You didn’t care for The Sopranos. As long as we still agree that Freddie Blassie truly was King of Men, though, I think we’ll be fine. Jason
You know who else is a pretty decent artist? Bill Willingham. Seriously, I think most people (and by people, I mean people who actually read comics) forget that he made a name for himself back in the 80’s writing AND drawing The Elementals.
His stuff back then was pretty solid. It’s too bad he gave up drawing comics, because I bet he would be even better now. I know he illustrated some of the prose sections in Fables, but I wish he do more.
@Jason: I hear you. I actually have gotten to like The Sopranos quite a bit after watching last season – I think I get it thematically now and disengaged the show from the hype.
It’s funny because whenever one of my friends doesn’t like something I do, I want to grill them for why. Mainly to get a different opinion and hold it up to my own. I’ve changed my opinion on work before based on friends’ views; they sometimes see something I hadn’t before.
And yes. Blassie was The King of Men. Complete compliance.
@Christian: I don’t think people make the association, probably because Elementals is kind of obscure now, but hell yeah Willingham was a great artist. I don’t begrudge the Buckingham though.

I have been on a trade binge as of late. I just picked up Girls, DMZ, 100% and Fables. Shanna is currently finishing Fables. She really likes it.
I also had a bad reaction when I heard the plot of the books. Sounded like a cross between bad furry fiction and a late night Role playing session.
“Roll a d20. Okay, your surprised. From around the corner comes the Big Bad Wolfe. He’s wearing tight pants. You are intrigued.”
