When Khoi Vinh decided he wanted to add illustrations into his personal site’s archives, I volunteered immediately. Khoi is definitely an inspiration of mine in design. His recent work on TheOnion.com and the New York Times’ website are amazing implementations of the grid in a web environment. His post detailing the Onion’s grid creation and implementation helped me immensley while redesigning Oriental Trading’s site. I even printed out copies of his post to show my staff.
The illustration was so much fun. I based it on Wally Wood’s famous 22 Panels That Always Work, but then I incorporated monsters in my little mini-narrative. The word balloons’ contents hold the titles of Khoi’s posts and the dates when they were published. I could sum up the experience like this: I paid homage to one of my favorite comic book artists in an illustration for one of my favorite web designers and I got to draw monsters. How could this be anything but a great experience?!?
Khoi was a great cheerleader and a pure joy to work with on this, and I’d like to thank him for the opportunity to be a part of his wonderful site!
