Whenever someone exclaims to me, “Golly, I wish I could draw like that,” I always tell them that they can. Seriously, I could teach the dog how to draw if he had an opposable thumb. Talent will only take you so far. Drawing or cartooning skill is from years of practice.
Now, having said that, I always think the same thoughts when I go hear live music. Thoughts of “I could never do that.” go rushing through my head. Music is just so foreign to me; I enjoy listening to it, but I can’t grasp the abstract nature of the process, especially in a band setting. How do they all get it right like that, together, all at once? Thinking all of these thoughts, I appreciate the music that much more. Truly a one time miracle that has to be repeated on a regular basis, the concert and coordination of sound.
I saw my friends play in Shelter Belt again this past Saturday, and it is just always so cool to see them and all my other musician friends in other bands play. I’m really lucky. Especially when you think of how many acquaintances invite you to see them play, and how often those acquaintances blow. To have so many talented friends that improve my quality of life with their music, well, like I said… that is just dumb luck.
Awww! Just as I was reading this, half wondering if I’m part of the “talented friends” or “acquaintances who blow” I clicked on the link. Very touching! :)
Although, I’m getting a LITTLE tired of giving our disc to national acts and hearing them rave for 10 minutes about the cover art (this time it was Roger Clyne (of the Refreshments, Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers) and the rest of his band.
Ok I’m not tired of it – from talking to some of these guys later, it’s a big part of why they actually open it and listen.
Hey Max – live playing is easy.. why do you think so many acts don’t allow recording devices at their shows?

Hey Max!
Your shelter belt link needs a dash!
One of my former students (chris tipton) did the shelter belt site and is somehow affilated with them. Do you know him?
