Micky Ward Movie?!?

This is the best news I’ve heard in awhile: Mark Wahlberg and Matt Damon are going to be in a movie about Micky Ward. A lot of people knock boxing, but if you haven’t seen any of the Ward v. Gatti fights, try and find them. It’s what boxing is truly about, and the fights helped reinvigorate the sport. Many call the first fight “The Fight of the Century,” and it actually lives up to the name. These two beat the crap out of each other, breaking their hands and sharing a hospital room afterwards as they recuperated. The fights are amazingly brutal because the two of them are just that fucking tough.

Not surprisingly, they are good friends now.

If you are a Dropkick Murphy’s fan, the song “The Warrior’s Code” is about Micky Ward.

Here is a page of YouTube videos from the fights.

Here is the item I saw about the movie. I agree with Cinematical; hopefully they don’t get too sentimental with the thing.

And of course, here is the Wikipedia entry on Ward.

I’m a huge fan of these guys, and boxing movies have been decent of late. But I’m always wary of true story movies that come out when the real thing is still fresh in my mind (I still hate that there are 9-11 movies).

So.. if it’s more about his life, and there’s really not much boxing in it I’ll be that much more interested. Completely disagree with that article on “How about a boxing film that’s about lots of blood and teeth on the canvas, for once?” Just watch his real fights for that.

Although if they did, Van Damme looks a lot like Arturo Gatti!

I have lived in Lowell, Ma. for over 25 years now. And Micky Ward is a living legend when it comes to boxing. It is about time that a film is made that deals with his rise to being one of the greats in boxing history. My only concern is that he (Micky) has more say as to how the film is made. In order that it is made properly. I also hope that the first screening takes place here in his home town, as it should.

Rob, that is awesome to have someone from Lowell come here and comment! Thanks, man.

I think everyone would hope that Micky would get a chance to have some say in the film. I think the fact that both Wahlberg and Damon are from Massachusetts though would be pressure enough to make sure it was done right if they ever want to go home :)
