    Monster Planet

Like zombies? Like serial fiction? You should check out David Wellington’s latest online novel, Monster Planet. It just started Monday, so you can jump on board quickly. Planet is the third online novel in a trilogy of books dealing with the world after a zombie apocalypse. It’s pretty damn frightening, surprisingly so when I read it first thing in the morning at work. Wellington is a good writer and hits all the right beats for the genre, but actually does surprisingly well at breaking cliches and conventions inherent to horror.

Let’s put it this way: I don’t read horror or sci-fi usually; I do read this. That enough?

Be sure to read the first two books when you have a second, you won’t regret it:

    1. Monster Island – The first book deals with a UN weapons inspector returning to the dead island of Manhattan to look for HIV drugs for a Somalian warlord who is protecting the inspector’s daughter from the worldwide zombie plague.
    2. Monster Nation – This book details how the zombies began to take over the world, one bite at a time.

( Also, if you have an iPod or a cellphone, you can read new chapters from those devices as well. )

I read most of Monster Nation. It was really good. I need to go back and read the rest of it and the other two novels.

The thing I love about all of them is that really, they shouldn’t be good. A serial novel about zombies? YAWN! Talk about a sub-genre that has been done to death. However, Wellington really does an amazing job with the material. Great stuff.
