More Spectacle, Links, and Thoughts
I’ve got a whole hell of a lot on my mind this morning, especially with the knowledge that there is only one page left for Quick Step so I just want to hit on some key things I’m thinking about:
- You want a good example of truth and spectacle in my mind? HBO’s Rome has been wonderful and rewarding to those who have stuck through it. It started slow and deliberate, detailing the political strife of the time, but last week… oh man. What a pay off! If we had been dealing with human nature’s reactions to power as a truth, we got a tremendous amount of spectacle last week. I won’t spoil it for you, but Kung Fu Monkey has a good reaction to one of the most bad ass scenes I’ve seen on television. The Thirteen!!!!! That is just gold.
- David Burn, big timey blogger extraordinare of Ad Pulp (in partnership with Shawn Hartley) was kind enough to link to me and promote Golden Boy after I did a header graphic for his music site, LeftoverCheese.com.
- I’ll write a more detailed review later, but I discovered DC’s entry into the value-priced black & white comic volumes yesterday – Showcase. These are supposed to be like Marvel’s Essential volumes, reprinting large runs of classic comics in black & white books (about 500 pages worth of material). I picked up the Green Lantern
book for 10 bucks. Not only is the Gil Kane art amazing, but the actual quality of the book is phenomenal. The paper is thicker and brighter, the art has been cleaned up and reprinted wonderfully in even, black ink, and the whole package stands heads above the Essential volumes in my mind. There is nothing “cheap” about this book – just exceptional value. It is a beautiful book. Christian picked up the Jonah Hex
- The Thirteeeeeeen!!!
- I discovered that there is a blog devoted entirely to Omaha’s Dundee area, and they liked my drinking scotch post enough to link to it. My last name is wrong, but it is a hard last name. For those not in the know, Dundee has a bar named the Dundee Dell, which has one of the largest scotch selections in North America, I’m told. It is also the bar I based “The Final Round” off of in Golden Boy

The Jonah Hex book is AWESOME! Like you said Max, the paper is nice and the blacks are stark and clean. I had read a couple of Hex stories before I picked up this book, and to be honest, I think that I prefer them in black and white. I’ve read about half of it already and the biggest surprise so far is that I am continuously impressed with the writing. It’s mature, dark, and funny. And I don’t mean funny in a kitschy way, I mean it’s funny in a totally Un-PC and deeply morbid way. Add that to the fact that I find it somewhat reminiscent of Lone Wolf & Cub, and you got yourself one helluva book.
The only thing that I find odd about the book is that instead of being entirely Jonah Hex, the back of the book has reprints of another character called Outlaw. Normally, I would be disappointed/pissed, but they’re drawn by the aforementioned and outstanding Gil Kane! I don’t know if this is all they had available as far as the Hex stuff goes, or maybe it was the only way they could reprint the Outlaw stuff. Whatever the case, even if the rest of the book blows ass, it’s already money well spent. Now, if only they would do a Showcase volume for Detective Chimp...

Holee Crap! There’s a JONAH HEX reprint book??? God damn i gotta get that this weekend! i MUST!
I have been lovign the Essential Marvel collections, mainly because i can get second stringer books like KILLRAVEN and WEREWOLF BY NIGHT this way, all in one volume. I have started up a shelf in my studio just for these babies.
