I went to lunch with some friends today. While waiting for a light to change, I was thinking about how I needed a new sketchbook. When I arrived, one of my friends just so happened to present me with a Christmas present, and, surprise, it was a new sketchbook.
I used to sketch all the time when I was in high school. Now, I’ll try to do it if I have the time, but it is usually just for a specific project. This evening, I sketched just to sketch. What a relief to just have fun drawing for once!
I’ve been screwing around with a more playful, animated style – Scott Morse, Scott Mills, Darwyn Cooke – and it has been interacting with my Simple Black studies a bit. I whipped up this guy after I was surfing the DC Comics site a bit. The new cover artist for Action Comics is bomb ass. I think his name is Bullock. Nice stuff, and this was for sure inspired by his work:

I can’t remember the last time I sketched a superhero!
