I had the pleasure of not only hearing Scott McCloud speak on his tour stop at Krypton Comics for his new book, Making Comics, but was able to hang out with the man and his wonderful family last night over drinks and dinner.
It isn’t often that I walk away from a conversation exhausted; the McClouds’ wealth of knowledge is dizzyingly immense and can be trotted out on demand. They are the sort of family that makes you think, “yes, I could have one of these some day.”
Mr. McCloud was wonderful. I could sit and listen to his ideas on comics and his theories on technology for hours and hours on end. A few other local artists were with me, and we were literally running back from the bathroom at the restaurant because we didn’t want to miss a single thing from the conversations that were going on. And I don’t run for anything, really.
If you are at all interested in creating comics, I can’t recommend Making Comics enough; it is the manual I wish I had read when I was young. It will definitely point you in the directions that you need to go as an artist.
If you would have told me 10 years ago that I would have been able to sit down and talk with Scott McCloud, I would have never believed you. Amazingly smart man, and his demeanor is just like how he depicts himself in his Comics trilogy.
Also, his family is such a treat. They are all as entertaining, witty and intelligent as he is. I’m sure their dinner conversations at the family dining table are quite lively!
