Okay, I’ve wanted to do this for two years now, and I never did because I was always working on a comic. I signed up for NaNoWriMo yesterday afternoon. For those who don’t know, NaNoWriMo stands for National Novel Writing Month. Held every year in November, each participant has to write 50,000 words starting on November 1st and finishing on the 30th. It doesn’t have to be good, but it has to be at least that many words.
Until college, I had no idea that I could write. I had never taken a writing class until I was a junior in college. After showing some promise, I never did anything with it because for some reason I felt that I had to just be a designer, since that is why I went to school (this is the same reason it took me so long to actually do a comic book also).
I’m over that crap now. I’ve proven to myself that I can be a good designer, and it is time to try out some other interests. How many times do you tell yourself “one of these days” on any given goal? Not me, brother. I work towards goals. I complete it. I move on. Finished a big one with releasing Golden Boy out into the wild. So… time to try the next big thing.
I’m going into this stress-free; I don’t care if I complete it at all. I just wanted to actually try something new, instead of talk about it. Hopefully I’ll get a good first draft out of the deal, so I can revise over a year or so.
Oh, and I’ll still be posting here regularly; I’m not becoming a shut-in for a month. Wish me luck!
Sweet deal, man. I think I might join this crusade seeing as thought I’m constantly writing short stories and what not.
Actually, and this is somewhat related, but I went to an author’s panel today. One of the author’s on the panel was Joshua Braff, the older brother of Zach Braff (of Scrubs and Gardenstate fame). He seemed like a good guy and signed my book with the following statement:
“Thanks for coming today. I so hope you enjoy this book!”
I thought it was a cool message and a break from the standard “Best Wishes”.
Another author on the panel was Amy Sohn, the lady who was the inspiration for Sex and the City.
Anyways, sorry to go somewhat off topic. I’m looking forward to what you come up with.:)
I hope I get the opportunity to read at least some of whatever you come up with, Max. You’ve got a great attitude about the thing—and I’m sure it will be a fruitful journey. Good luck. I look forward to hearing more about the experience.
Even if I don’t see anything for more than a year, I hope I get to see something. I don’t think the work you generate over the course of the next month should be considered anything more than a draft, anyway—because it’s absurd to think a person could create a brilliant novel in 30 days that doesn’t require substantial revision. So I’m sympathetic, and I wish you lots of luck—and stamina. But you’re a strong writer with what appears to be endless curiosity, so I think you’re going to have a great time.
