To Those About to Write, I Salute You

Yeah, sure it is Halloween. Get your costume on and get over it because tomorrow, all over the country people will begin to write their novels. November is National Novel Writing Month, where you write a novel (50,000 words) in 30 days. I am a 2004 Winner. It is one of the most thrilling and exciting experiences I’ve ever done. There is still time to sign up. Ben is going to do it, and so is my mother.

Unfortunately, I won’t be participating this year. I have too many projects going on right now, including finishing up Quick Step and a little project with the Pinups.

I just updated that section with November’s entry and updated how you get the files. Now, you can just click on a link and it downloads the size you want automatically (instead of right-clicking and “Save Target As”). If you want to preview the image before you download it, you can click on the image preview that follows every headline. The reason for the switch is I can track the downloads better. I tested this out in October (as many of you probably noticed). So far, October’s desktop has been downloaded over 200 times. 200 times! That just blows me away. Seeing as how that section already is a big winner with my Adsense ads, expect some more attention in that area soon. I should have something neat to show you at the end of November.

I still wish I could write a novel this month, however. There is nothing like getting out of whatever soul-crushing rut your life is in than creating a novel (even if it sucks, sometimes that is better).

Am I wrong, or can I just email them 50,000 words of jibberish and become a “winner”?

    From the FAQs :

How do you stop people from cheating, then? Couldn’t participants claim whatever word count they want?

Yes, they can. But since the only real prize of NaNoWriMo is the self-satisfaction that comes with pulling off such a great, creative feat, we don’t really worry too much about people cheating. Those who enter an impossibly high number or send in 50,000 words they copied from Wikipedia.org just to see their name on the Winner’s page are pitiful indeed, and likely need more help than a downloadable winner’s certificate can provide them.

If you cheat, you go to hell. That’s the small print you never read.

I’m going to start writing tomorrow moring, going for a 3- or 4-day production. I’ll probably be insane by the end, of course.

oh, and you have CSS problem, max. the comment preview stretches crazy long if it’s shorter than the Hello Kitty & Google Ad block.

Think I got it fixed, thanks Kenneth. Good luck with your word spree!
