I was reading a good article this weekend in the WSJ which quoted Francois Truffaut: good cinema is a blend of truth and spectacle. The article went on to postulate that most indy films have too much truth and blockbusters have too much spectacle. Of course, I couldn’t help but think of comics.
It seems like the general comic purchasing public want their entertainment the same way: blockbuster superheroics (Identity Crisis) or truthful independent (Blankets
) work.
Is there a happy medium? I think there is, and I think that the sci-fi genre is where a well blended story can be told. This realization is one I’ve mentioned before. After I’m done with Quick Step, I’ll be taking a couple months off to write this sci-fi script. Quick Step was all about taking a break from big stories (and grim stories); I wanted to tell a good non-violent story in a small space. This sci-fi story will be all about long form truth and spectacle.

Dude, our society is based on the concept of the spectacle. It’s pretty sickening how far Disney and whatever other entertainment mega-conglomerates have taken it.
Truth? Huh?
