    Wood's Cannon

Christian has been picking up old Wally Wood work, which of course I’ve then been borrowing to read. I’ve known Wood from his sci-fi EC work after the Tales from the Crypt series on HBO made way for all those reprintings of the original EC work in the early 90s. However, I hadn’t ever really seen much else that he had done. Christian gave me Marvel Masterworks: Daredevil, T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents Vol.1 and Vol.2, and Cannon.

So far, my favorite is Cannon, which is basically Wood’s attempt at James Bond, American Style. If James Bond movies were actually like this, I would love them. Girls lose their clothes for absolutely no reason and then help the title character, Cannon, lose his, after they blow up some stuff (pinkos, hippies, or other subversive elements). Don’t worry though, there’s no time for love (just lovin’) as Cannon was double-brainwashed to be the perfect killing machine. It is absolutely hilarious for all the wrong reasons, and the art is magnificent. Wood’s deceitful women are beautifully (and nakedly) rendered on nearly every page. Watch Cannon fish in Iowa, sleep with all women (enemy or not), then drive away in his spy-sexy sports car after he suggests his girl get an abortion.
