Whenever I speak with anyone such as a lawyer or business banker about starting a company over the phone, I get encouraging words. I’m talking, they are talking – I actually sound like a confident man, an entrepreneur.
When they ask me what my business will be, that right there is where it falls apart. I bumble and mumble through it (“Uh…well, yeah, comics…”) and I am met with what feels like three minutes of silence on the phone. Three minutes of agonizing hell. Finally, I get a “Mmmokay!” out of the deal, like they need a bit more and I don’t really know what to tell them. I think it is because most of the entrepreneurs I’ve met won’t shut their face about their “brilliant” idea. The people that work with them to make that happen are used to it. And then there’s little shy old me, where I’m kind of oversimplifying the whole thing.
It is basically me playing the Tim Robbins role in The Hudsucker Proxy, and getting the same reaction with his idea.
I’m just going to start bringing a comic with me to meetings and holding it up like a badge… “you know… online!”
Its a… its a thing I tell ya… a great thing….
You know, for kids!
